Diego Campagna began studying the guitar at the age of eight, (after listening to a record by the unforgettable Maestro Andrés Segovia), under the Maestro Carlo Ghersi and Mario Senise’s direction in Sanremo. Later he continued his studies with the Maestro Davide Ficco at the Conservatoire “G.F. Ghedini” in Cuneo where he brilliantly graduated at a very young age and also obtained a guitar doctorate. From 2003 to 2006 he studied at the Salzburg Mozarteum University graduating with full marks (Postgraduate Universitatslehrgang) with the Maestro Eliot Fisk (one of the greatest interpreters of our time and dedicatee, among other things, of the Sequenza XI for solo guitar by Luciano Berio), with whom he deepened the technical fundamentals of the instrument and defined his own identity as interpreter of the guitar literature.
He followed the master classes of some of the world’s greatest representatives of the six strings: Alirio Diaz, Eliot Fisk, Eduardo Fernandez, Roland Dyens, Ricardo Gallen. His debut at the age of fourteen was at the Casino of Sanremo Opera House. For several years he has been carrying out an intensive concert activity as a soloist and in chamber groups (among them the great soprano Mariella Devia, the “Neus Wiener Quartet” of Wien, in duo with the violinist Fation Hoxholli, the cellist Katharina Gross, the flutist Roberto Orengo) in Italy and abroad: USA, Austria, Germany, France, Spain, Switzerland, Croatia, Romania, Hungary, Norway, performing in some of the most prestigious concert halls of Europe. He is regularly invited as a judge in major national and international competitions, among them the international competition “Counterpoint” 2012 in New York dedicated to guitar compositions. On 27 January 2013, in his recital, he executed “world premiere” in the prestigious Jan Hus Church in Manhattan, the piece for solo guitar “Takemitsu’s Dream” by Greg Caffrey, winner of the “Counterpoint” competition. He gave other two recitals in New York dedicated to the Segovia repertoire for guitar and music of the most important Italian composers of the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, which consecrated him among the most important guitarists in the world of his generation.
Together with his concert activities he engages in fervent didactic activity with numerous pupils (many of whom brilliantly pass their exams in the Italian Conservatoires and obtain recognitions in important competitions) and every August he takes an international master class in four languages at the Badalucco (Imperia) town council during the international manifestation “MusicalMente Festival”. From 2006 he is the conceiver and artistic director of the “Festival Classico del Ponente Ligure” in Imperia and the “MusicalMente Festival” in Badalucco (Valle Argentina); he is also the artistic director of the festival “Taggia in Classica” (Taggia). Diego is also the President and the Artistic Director of “Guitar & Friends” Italy.
