The Boston Latin-American Orchestra (BLAO) is a chamber orchestra created to celebrate Latin-American orchestral music. The orchestra is comprised of current and former students of New England Conservatory as well as musicians from the Boston area, with both Latino and non-Latino backgrounds. Our goal is to bring Latin-American orchestral music to audiences and areas in Boston, Massachusetts where this music is not usually heard in order to promote a different perspective on Latin-American culture and musical heritage. Our concerts are designed in a way that involves participation of Latino and non-Latino audiences and performers, creating an entertaining atmosphere where people can participate in the music that is being performed. Our concerts also provide a voice for the Latino people of Boston and create a welcoming environment for cultural exchange. The orchestra is working towards becoming a non-profit organization and has created a smaller chamber ensemble from the orchestra to perform and promote the orchestra in different venues throughout Boston.

Prof. Phillip de Fremery of Smith College writes:
“The Guitar Fest was a work of art, state of the art. I felt it was the kind of event which continues to reward all who were there and further down the line, all those who come into meaningful contact with those who were there.
The playing levels were of course exemplary.
But there were also the intangibles — I felt there was a palpable halo of brotherhood shimmering over the entire event, each day I was there. ”
Thank you Prof. de Fremery! And hope to see you all at GuitarFest 2012!

Eliot Fisk and Zaira Meneses in Concert to benefit the Thomas Hiksdal Fund
Catherine Cramer created the Thomas Hiksdal Scholarship Fund in honor of her husband, and thanks to the Hiksdal Fund it has been possible to lower the price for full festival participation and award individual scholarships in cases of extreme financial need. Funds are raised through an event held in a private residence on Cape Cod each year. Eliot Fisk and Zaira Meneses will be performing in this year’s benefit event for the Hiksdal Fund, followed by a reception.
Sunday September 11, 2011 – 4 PM
Tickets: $100 per person

The Winner of the Composition Competition for Boston GuitarFest VI 2011 is Jonathan Godfrey from Bloomington, Indiana, and his work “Sonatina for guitar solo — Blue. Night. Pools“. Mr. Godfrey will receive a cash prize of $400 and a free 5-day registration for Boston GuitarFest 2012; his winning composition will be performed as part of Boston GuitarFest 2012.
The judges have also named three honorable mentions, presented here in alphabetical order: Ying-Chen Kao from Baltimore, Maryland, for his work, “Lila. Star. Bird.”, Marek Pasieczny from Zamosc, Poland, for “Sequenza”, and Luis Nieto Sachica, from Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, for “Reminisce.”
Special thanks to the Boston GuitarFest Composition Competition judges, Apostolos Paraskevas, Alexander Dunn, and Anthony Paul De Ritis.
And a large round of applause for the truly exceptional submissions that we received from the guitar composers community! This year we had 83 composers submit 120 works from 31 different U.S. states, Puerto Rico, and 11 different countries — there were so many wonderful compositions. Keep up the good work!

Guitar represents a symbol of Italian musical tradition and I welcome this year’s edition of Boston GuitarFest with special guest Oscar Ghiglia.
The festival is for musicians and music lovers alike who wish to celebrate the power of music and its universal means of human expression.
Join this wonderful experience of art and entertainment and, as a popular Italian song goes “Lasciatemi cantare con la chitarra in mano, lasciatemi cantare sono un italiano” (Let me sing with the guitar in my hands, let me sing I am Italian).
