Performance Competitions
The 2008 Boston GuitarFest Competitions will run concurrently with the festival. The competitions are open to all registrered master class participants, but it is also possible to register for the competitions alone.

2008 Adult Competition Winners
1st place
Cecilio Perera. From Mexico, he is currently studying at the Mozarteum University in Salzburg, Austria.
2nd place
Isaac Bustos. Born in Nicaragua, he emigrated to US in 1988. Currently he is assistant lecturer at Texas A&M.
3rd place
Yuri Liberzon. Born in Russia, he lives and teaches in New York and has his Master's degree from Yale University.
4th place
Jonathan Dotson. He is currently in the Doctral program at University of Texas at Austin.



Youth Competition - June 14, 2008

Eligibility

  • Contestants must be younger than 19 years of age as of June 14, 2008.
  • Contestants must not be enrolled in a post-secondary institution as of June 14, 2008.
  • Contestants cannot hold a post-secondary degree of any kind.

Prizes

  • 1st prize: $ 750
  • 2nd prize: $ 500
  • 3rd prize: $ 250

Required Pieces

  • Preliminary round: 8-12 minutes of music, including at least 2 pieces from Leo Brouwer’s Etudes Simples (Estudios Sencillos), 1-20.
  • Final round: 15-20 minutes of music.  Free choice.  Preliminary round pieces may be repeated, including the required pieces.
  • Individual movements from major works are acceptable.
  • No concertos or chamber music will be permitted.

Instrumentation

  • All pieces must be performed on a nylon-string, classical guitar.

Memorization

  • All works must be performed from memory.

Copies of Scores

  • Contestants must bring with them one copy of each score for use by the judges.

Adjudication

  • The judges' decisions are final.  The judges reserve the right to hear all or part of the prepared works.  Performances going over the time limit may be stopped at no penalty to the contestant.

Application and Scheduling Information

  • All applications will be acknowledged upon receipt.
  • Boston GuitarFest has the right to limit the number of participants based on a first come, first serve basis.
  • Performance times will be determined by a random drawing.  Special requests cannot be accommodated.
  • Failure to appear at the appointed time will result in disqualification.

Adult Competition - Entire Week

Eligibility

  • Contestants must be at the outset of their careers and may not have professional representation.
  • Previous winners of the Boston GuitarFest competition are not eligible.
  • There is no age limit.

Prizes

  • First prize: $2500, concert in 2009, CD recording (at discretion of the jury)
  • Second prize: $1500
  • Third prize: $500
  • Interpretation prize for music with West-East cross-cultural influences: $250
  • Interpretation prize for Rochberg Caprice Variations: $250 (At least 4 Variations must be performed)
